Must not be any staccatos in that score.

The Bricasti is stunning. I found this last year: a cue realized in VSL by Andreas Koslik, run through three different presets on an M7:

My guess is your demo Guy is going to sell a few hundred copies of CSII. Lovely, and masterful sequencing.

I very much want to be able to effectively mock-up Bernard Herrmann's sound....PFP's in sordino will do the trick.

SvK

Sample Content (Dynamics) shows "Medium crescendo and diminuendo, 1.5, 2, 3, and 4 sec.; Crescendo-diminuendo, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 8 sec". Maybe the latter is a pfp-like articulation? "Crescendo-diminuendo" articulations must be different from the keyswitched "crescendo and diminuendos" listed before them, and they sure sound like the kind of thing you're (quite rightly IMO) campaigning for.
5.Favorite individual film cues of all time? 6/12/2008 11:11:41 PM
Mine:

The Road, Farenheit 451, Bernard Hermann; Main Title and First Victim, Jaws, John Williams, and Shifting Gears, Bullitt, Lalo Schifrin.

Another day and I might recall others I'm just as enthusiastic about, but I'll hand these in now.
6.List your 3 favorite all-time film-scores 6/12/2008 11:01:26 PM
Good choices SvK.

Here are mine: Bullitt (Schifrin), The Untouchables (Morriconne), The Insider (Gerrard/Bourke).

But we need a thread for favorite cues also, dont we? I'll start it.
7.Comments please! 4/13/2008 6:56:19 PM
Very cool, my kinda stuff. Beautiful arrangement.

Stumbled on this a couple weeks ago, before viewing this thread:

Might be prudent to bump bagpipes up the list, before the treehuggers get them outlawed...
9.MacPro_Audio interface_Your Choice? 1/17/2008 12:25:38 AM
Cool. I had good experience with Lynx when I had their card a couple years ago.
10.MacPro_Audio interface_Your Choice? 1/16/2008 10:38:05 AM
Nick, haven't compared to RME's...isn't that the only PCIe alternative? I did hear last year Lynx were working on a card, maybe that's out. Anyway, no, haven't. Just my data point I guess: Symphony on my 8-core works swell. I guess I'm just so stoked to be back on a PCI-anything.

I'm a big fan of engineers working with each other directly as much as possible, rather than relyting primarily on intermediary standards and protocols (like Firewire). Apogee's developing solely for the Mac, They're in SoCal, Apple's a 50 minute flight up here to Cupertino. I like this the same way I like Digi's set-up developing HD (and Apple with the Mac, come to think of it). Doesn't mean it will work better, but its a healthy arrangement that encourages good results.
11.MacPro_Audio interface_Your Choice? 1/14/2008 2:23:59 PM
Hey Sonny,
I see what you mean, I too would like better digital i/o options from Apogee. Though if you're getting an 8-core, especially one of the new ones, I'd look seriously at the option of converting your Giga stuff to EXS24 and just going with a single machine. And really, with Apogee in bed with Apple on this thing, I'd let the tail wag the dog on your set-up a little bit just for the anticipated stability and performance.

To be honest I haven't used 128, by habit I'm at 256 unless tracking something critical where I'll use 64 or 32. I have had 50 or so VI's streaming (mostly Vienna but some others) at 256, so I should think 30 at 128 with a new 8-core quite doable.
12.Most Wanted New Articulations 1/14/2008 4:59:02 AM
I'd like suggest that three players is a better number than 2-player desks or 1-player benches. Three is the minimum for a genuine ensemble sound, and I'd rather be mixing ensemble sounds than trying to create them out of non-ensemble recordings.
13.MacPro_Audio interface_Your Choice? 1/14/2008 4:45:55 AM
Well geez man you've already got the Rosetta 800; get the two Symphony cards (PCIe and the small card for the Rosetta) and be done with it. No metrics for you, but I replaced my last Firewire interface (Ensemble) with the Symphony/Rosetta and haven't looked back. Rock solid (not a single snap, crackle, pop in 6 months) under full template loads, ridiculously low latency. Just do it - unless you enjoy shopping and fussing about. ;)

I think this is more about intelligent (anti-piracy) product design.

Observe that a serial number is something that can be duplicated, and safely and inconspicuously hidden in multiple places!

I do like the simplicity of dongles and their portability. I just think their implementation needs to be refined with respect to loss/theft.

cm wrote:
let me add a counterexample here: i have a really expensive backup software for which the serial number has been lost somewhen and obviously nobody ever registered it at the vendor's website.

This however does seem to fall under "responsible for taking care on things." :)
15.Dongles 1/3/2008 10:05:07 PM
Right. I'm down here in Argentina with a $10,000 baggie full of dongles. I wouldn't suggest my wife bring her diamonds down here (uh, if she had some...well she does have the one), but I've no choice.

I suppose the dongles are the best current solution, but in certain respects they are far from a good solution, and place an inappropriate burden on customers.

It would be one thing if insurance for loss or theft was readily available, as it is for automobiles (and jewels...), but it is not. This is one huge grey area in existing policies (many of which limit coverage for computer and audio equipment to begin with). I do think developers, and especially the anti-piracy developers like Syncrosoft and Pace, have a responsibility to sort things in this area.

If I must have dongles, why couldn't they be secured physically (as in a "wired" safe deposit box), and then pinged remotely when I want to use the software? Really, Pace and Syncrosoft are taking in hefty fees...they need to put in the work to earn them.

That said, I hold zero malice for music software developers using dongles. I reserve that for the f@#*ing software thieves that have brought this all about.

Ah yes, I see. Thank you.

Does this apply if I'm purchasing from my music store, or only for direct online purchase from Vienna? Thanks.
18.Greatest Film Melodies 12/4/2007 9:33:18 PM
Maurice Jarre and Michel Legrand must be counted in the list of great film melodists.

We're all familiar with highlighted buttons, but this doesn't apply to Web UI search fields (confirmed in a PM from the webmaster of this site).

Emphasis on the word "button" here, as it doesn't search if you just hit return (as you might expect). At least that's the case in Safari.

Colin, don't think that's practical (or practiced). A flute's forte equals a trombone's pianissimo (in absolute values). You'd need a new dynamic marking system/convention to accommodate absolute values in the score. Decibels! "Uhh...violas: the fourth bar, could you bring that down just a little more, maybe -37 instead of -30 as he's marked here?..." ;)

(Sorry, can't seem to bring up the edit page for this post above...).

Colin: Also meant to to direct you again to the paper I've referenced a post or two up the page (Strawn, Intensities of Orchestral...). I believe this is exactly the information you expressed a desire for in an earlier post (and which I looked high and low last year to find!)

Felix and others,

"Intensities of Orchestral Instrument Scales Played at Prescribed Dynamic Markings" is a 1964 MIT paper, principal author William Strawn, available from AES online. I've uploaded a couple snippets to:

http://homepage.mac.com/johnnymarks

Useful data and interesting observations in the paper. Worth the $20 download.

Cheers.

25.Sure I'm just overlooking it, but where's the FORUM search? 9/24/2007 9:13:56 PM
Hi Rainer,

User error - I'd been typing in a search term then hitting return. Clicking on the "Search" button DOES work (filtering for just the posts containing the search term).

Note though that when hitting "return" with the cursor in the box, the page does make some kind of request to the server and the page reloads. This lead me to think it was responding to my search query (whereas apparently it is doing something else).

Hope this helps.
