1.Surge XT (not showing up in VEP) 7/10/2022 5:28:11 PM

Oh. I see.

Thanks for the reply.

2.Surge XT (not showing up in VEP) 7/10/2022 10:00:41 AM

so there's this free open source synth which works fine in every other DAW i have but does not show up in VEP and I can't figure out why.

does VEP support VST3?

Surge XT is installed here
C:\Program Files\Common Files\VST3\Surge Synth Team\Surge XT.vst3\Contents\x86_64-win\Surge.vst3
C:\Program Files\Common Files\VST3\Surge Synth Team\Surge XT Effects.vst3\Contents\x86_64-win\Surge XT Effects.vst3

I'm using Windows 10, 64bit with VEP Server 7.1.1329 (64bit)

Where do I start with debugging this problem?

(I already did a "Reset and Rescan All")

That's fixed it.

No idea why libs are not showing up in Syncrhon player despite being listed in "volume scan paths"

5.I made a FIRST LOOK video on VEP7 w/ Bitwig 5/8/2022 5:55:50 AM

I thought I'd share my experience learning to use VEP with Bitwig.

Feedback and comments appreciated.

Interesting. Thanks for the reply guys. It seems that people use it very differently according to their needs. I appreciate you guys sharing with me how you like to use it.

I ended up doing a "first look" video where I share my progress of what I have learned thus far.

7.ports vs channels (midi) 5/4/2022 5:17:09 PM

Traction Waveform 11 Pro seems to cope but I will have to noodle around with it to see how it translates or whether it works at all.

I had no idea but apparently Waveform 12 dropped last month and I didn't even notice. I'll have to take it for a spin and see how fun it is to work with VEP. They have a 90 day trial.

Just tried it in Studio ONE and it's nice and easy there. You just get a massive list of channels preceded by a port number. A lazy, but effective implementation.

IE: VST3 supports multiple ports; whether the host is implementing it, I only know from those two, and on paper the Event Input workaround.

Okay, thanks for the info. I found the following on a 2018 VI-control post
https://vi-control.net/community/threads/creating-multiple-midi-ports-in-reaper.71523/

So apparently reaper has this concept of MIDI buses and the guy reckons it works with VST3 ports for VE. First time I heard about it. I can't seem to wire it up using my copy of Reaper but will try again later. I'll have to ask in respective DAW forums for more info.

This is the problem I have found with learning VEP. There is little to no information that is DAW specific. I read the notes for Studio ONE in the manual and they were pretty useless. If you're not using cubase, digital performer, logic, or protools then you're out of luck. I have like 9 DAWs and none of them are protools, logic, DP or cubase. Although I am evaluating DP at the moment.

I plan on doing some YT videos on using VEP with the different DAWs as soon as I figure more stuff out. Not much out there to go on.

10.ports vs channels (midi) 5/4/2022 1:32:22 PM

I've never seen any DAWs that have multiple 'ports' for any given virtual instrument.
Am I missing something? Which DAWs can take advantage of VEP's multiple ports?

I have no problems with routing midi clips to different midi channels within VEP but then that means I am limited to 16 per instance.

Do I need to use the Event VI for that? The manual says that you only need the Event VI when you are limited to VST2 support. I am using VST3. I did try the event VI but it was dropping events hopelessly (not sending note-on events for ages, then not sending note-offs - leaving me with lots of stuck notes).

I would really like to know how to access all these ports in one instance.

I'm currently using Bitwig, but I also have Studio ONE 5.5, Reaper, Ableton Live 10, Harrison Mixbus 7, Waveform 11.

Any info much appreciated.

11.surround 5/4/2022 12:09:52 PM

Anyone here compose specifically for surround music?

I'm interested to hear your thoughts and recommendations. Lessons learnt etc. Is there much work for post-production mixing to surround (eg. dolby atmos).

What do you think of the Penteo plugins?

Is binaural monitoring with headphones useful or just a gimmick?

Do you send any musical content to the LFE when composing for film?

12.VEP instances (workflow) 5/4/2022 2:27:32 AM

I'm new to VEP. Actually, just doing my first VEP project and being challenged to rethink my workflow - how much I want to rely on the DAW vs how much i want to load into VEP. I'm thinking I may as well go the whole hog and load pretty much everything into VEP and just use my DAW as a 'sequencer' as suggested by the continuous usage of that nomenclature in VSL documentation.

So my question is, what is the typical reason/useage-case for needing more than a single instance in VEP?

What is the disadvantage of just loading everything into a single instance.

Specifically, I am looking for reasons that go beyond using multiple instances as purely an organizational function.

What are the technical reasons for multiple VEP instances in a single project?

(I use a range of DAWs)
