1.Good legato in Opus 1 strings? 2/8/2009 9:51:28 AM

Any advice?

I'm running in exs24 in Logic 8.   Only have a very basic midi keyboard-  no mod or pitch wheels.   Been fiddling with ADSR and crossfades with many instances to get the desired "legato" parts in my music.

2.My first real "gig," and a "dilemma." Suggestions welcome. 2/8/2009 9:26:11 AM

Thanks folks,

The situation somewhat resolved itself.   A much bigger/ better film came along right when things were going south with the first prospect.   We will stay in touch though, and there might be more work there in the future.

I normally don't pop on just to say "thanks for the replies," but there was some great advice and in the end I was able to follow my heart and head.

3.My first real "gig," and a "dilemma." Suggestions welcome. 11/21/2008 3:31:46 AM
Hi all,

I've been writing, producing, playing, etc for quit a long time.

I've only just recently started wring a lot of "filmey" things, with the goal of eventually doing some film work. Finally, I have a good lead. Actually, it's writer/director with some very good credentials, a lot of indie film awards, etc. He really liked my reel and we are discussing a score for his current project.
So, this is not exactly a "post" question, but was looking for the best place to ask for advice; The film that he will likely end up asking me to score is.... well, not just dark, but from the trailer, looks extremely violent. Now, I have no problem with a violent flick, and actually I have plenty of ideas for creepy dramatic effect with my own style for his visuals. Essentially, though, it looks like this may end up being an indie equivalent of "Hostel."
Now, I'm not "judging" a film like that, because it certianlly has it's value, and I get it.. understand his vision, etc. However, since I see myself as a little bit less of as "for hire," and wanting to look at my film work as more of an "art form,"

I actually ended up asking myself- "do I want to be associated this film?" I don't want to blow my chances with this director because he's prolific and it would give me a lot of other exposure and leads.

So, breaking into this whole thing, I feel like I'm suddenly considering "turning down" a project for reasons I never thought I'd ever "turn down" a film.

It's a big goal of mine to develop this and do more and more film work. Would love to make this a career someday.

Suggestions?

I have not seen the whole film, and I feel like I should, now that I'm worried about the "content." He's finishing some editing but I understand it's all in the can.

Funny thing is, I generally don't have a problem with horror flicks, but I, and everyone I've showed the trailer to, is... disturbed. Suddenly, I'm asking myself- "is my first real film going to be something that I'd never want my fiancee or mother to see?"
4.Multiple Vienna Keys 12/17/2006 6:52:22 PM
No;

but I am new to Vienna. Hope I did not ruffle feathers, and perhaps my perception of what dongle keys should cost is off-base, but I have never had to buy one seperately.

Cheers.
5.Multiple Vienna Keys 12/17/2006 6:32:08 AM
$23.00 for a single USB dongle? I looked up the price on sweetwater.

I don't mind paying a premium for the excellent samples and the licensing of course...

But frankly I have to speak up here; this one took me by surprise. I am dissappointed, guys. I guess syncrosoft is making a killing off Vienna's customers. Oh well.
6.Multiple Vienna Keys 12/17/2006 3:56:54 AM
This may be a stupid question,

but is the key included when I purchase a VI? I am about to purchase Chamber Strings, and under the requirements, it says "vienna key."
7.Michael Andrews- Donnie Darko 12/17/2006 3:11:36 AM
Didn't grow up listening to it when it was new, but I did grow up on th eoldies station that was ALWAYS on in my dad's van. Pet sounds is probably one of my favorite records of all time; "God Only Knows" is so brilliant I can't describe. But of course we all probably know this already. (:
8.Michael Andrews- Donnie Darko 12/15/2006 7:28:14 AM
Thanks D,

I saw the film Orange County a long time ago and never even thought about the score.

Will check out the unaccompanied minors soundtrack.

Hi Folks,

Anyone familiar with this score/ soundtrack?

Excellent stuff; a slight elfmann edge here and there with some of the voices, but nothing that I would say is derivitive of "dark" elfmann.. just seems very original to me. The 1-minute bits in this score I think are brilliant. Some great Atonal things going on.

By the way; I noticed some serious recording mistakes... probably in post/ mastering/ manufacturing of the CD. Clipping, and even I can hear a 60-hz buzz on the left on the more quiet stuff on my tannoys. It was a low-budget film by many standards though, and I'll bet some of these tracks were mockups perhaps even done on spec, recycled until they made the CD which they never expected anyone to buy. (:

Anyone heard it, or can recommend anything similar?
10.Ram upgrade in preperation for VI... Fringe benefits? 12/15/2006 2:50:34 AM
I just ordered 2 1-gig sticks of Samsung ram for my dual 1.8 (4-dimm socket) G5.

Currently, she has only 1.25 (Apple saw fit to only equip this machine with 256 when bought.. I added 2x512 in the other two sockets).

So, she will be going from 1.25 to 3 gigs of ram, mainly in preperation for my vienna insturments "chamber strings" purchase happening soon.

Other than the obvious necessity for Vienna, do you guys think I'll notice a "difference" with my apps? I just upgraded to Tiger last week BTW, and no problems. I am running 10.4.6 happily. I am looking for some "fringe benefits" after such pricey purchases that were necessary to make such an enormous sample library run on my machine. (up until now, as glorious as the M-tron is, it's the only strings I have to work with so I needed somethign "real" to compliment it).

Also... should I upgrade to 10.4.8? I'm scared to, since 10.4.6 seems so smooth with Logic exp 7.1.1 and Ableton Live 5.

Thank-you kindly for your qualitative responses and observations.
11.What are Appassionata strings? 11/14/2006 9:51:37 PM

The appassionata strings are not released yer, only part of the violins are a free download bonus for our Pro Edition users who upgraded to the Vienna Instruments.

You can here this appassionata violins (in combination with the orchestral strings) in Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings:

http://www.vsl.co.at/Player2.aspx?Lang=13&DemoId=4865

The section sizes are:

Violin ensemble (20 players)
Viola ensemble (14 players)
Cello ensemble (12 players)
Bass ensemble (10 players)

Barber's adagio is one of my favorite peices ever. I'm not sure which parts would qualify as the appoisionata.. unless it means "passionate?"

12.Decided to purchace VI.. a few things... 11/14/2006 5:07:31 PM
I'm surprised and embarassed that I missed that....

And a bit dissappointed.

I'm sort of looking at re-configuring everything.. finally after I find a stable configuration for ALL of my hosts, apps, plugs, etc... AND having to buy a new O/S.

Hmmm...
13.What are Appassionata strings? 11/14/2006 5:01:53 PM
Is it some sort of articulation or playing style? How many players, etc?

Can someone point me to an audio example.. or a peice where they are used a lot?
14.Decided to purchace VI.. a few things... 11/14/2006 4:51:12 PM
Hello,

So sometime in December, I will purchase a VI; still not entirely sure if will be chamber strings or orch strings; probably chamber.

This is a hardware and OS preperation question:

I am running OS 10.3.9 on a dual 1.8 PPC G5. All is smooth in Logic and Ableton. I use a seperate drive for audio; it's 200 Gigs

-Is it recommended to have another drive JUST for VSL? If so, will another Lacie 7200 RPM do the trick?

I have 1.2 Gigs of Ram. Should I upgrade to 2 or more?

Finally, are things stable on 10.3.9? The host will be both/ either Logic Express 7 or Ableton 5 and 6. I use all of those, but can stay in Logic if necessary.
15.New Instruments 10/19/2006 8:50:37 PM
I am going to sound ignorant (I actually AM),

but what are Appassionata Strings? Is it a sort of style of playing in terms of general articulations?

If anyone can also post an example of how such a string secion would sound.. or a peice where it is used....
16.(soon to be new user) Legato? 8/16/2006 10:49:32 PM
WOW!

Now I understand what the legato tool really means... . you guys already did LOADS of work to get it right... it always references the note you are on to get to your target note.

This stuff is scary. (:
17.Chamber strings with more violins "stacked?" 8/16/2006 10:33:41 PM
Thanks Matt,

That is a very good example.
18.(soon to be new user) Legato? 8/16/2006 8:34:37 PM
Thanks Paul and folks. It seems with the VI's the sample world finally has the realism I want to be able to bring my creations to life.

my biggest dilemma now is weather to go for Chamber strings or Orch strings.

I can only afford 1 VI to start with, and if I go for Orch stings, I would have to buy 1 and 2!
19.(soon to be new user) Legato? 8/16/2006 8:16:59 PM
Good to know... so it is not a tool, and rather a patch that will work better depending on the gap or overlap between notes.. which could be shored up in a matrix editor in Logic.

Any thoughts on how it compares to ECQLG's Q legato?
20.(soon to be new user) Legato? 8/16/2006 8:00:03 PM
Hello,

I know that for the music I will be creating, legato is a very important thing for me.. both with single insturments and groups of strings. Violins, violas, etc.

How is legato applied with the VSL.. specifically the VI's? Does it follow what you do in real-time? What is the legato tool and how does it work?

I guess I am asking about why Vienna may be better than others with legato, and how it is used.... do you somehow add "ties" in a matrix editor or something?

Grazie.

Exactly!

Yes I think he is brilliant. UN-traditional, heart-wrenching compositions.

Thanks guys,

This is all great information based on experience. This forum in and of it'self is a great tool for one who would purchase these libraries.

I would certianlly like to get the Sam Ash folks here in Charlotte, NC to load up some VI's for me and see if I can spend an hour or so twiddling around. I have been to some good Sam Ash's... but the one here in Charlotte dissappoints me.. the workers practially TRY to ignore you. Anyway, I digress.

If anyone were to post an MP3 of how some layering sounds with Chamber that would sure be appreciated.

Yes, I do not yet have a drive that would dedicated to samples. This is recommended? Something around a 100-gig would not be costly. And I guess I should cough up for more Ram. It is not costly for me to go to 3 gigs.. and I suppose I could save a little longer and purchase the ram when I buy the VI.

Also,

If someone could point me/ us in the direction of a composition that was done JUST using VI's chamber, and another that used JUST Orch strings, that would also be splendid. I have heard some amazing things in the user section (for "whispy" orch sounds, the samuel Barber blew me away.. and he is one of my favorite modern composers), but it is not always listed what they used... and many are combinations of libraries.

A bit O/T... does anyone here like Gorecki? (:
23.A little confused what to buy first 8/15/2006 9:18:35 PM
Hmmm...

I was looking for intimate sounds that could be more lush and big when I needed them to be.. it looks like trying to make orch strings sound intimate is easier and better than making chamber strings sound lush?

I have posted another thread.. I am new to VSL.

Hmmm..

I am reading on another thread that it's easier to make the Orch strings sound more intimate than to make the chamber strings sound bigger and more lush...

This migh tbe a tough decision, as it's quite impossible to "demo" a sample library.

25.Chamber strings with more violins "stacked?" 8/15/2006 9:03:34 PM
Hello,

I am very close to purchasing a string library. It looks as though VSL is far superior to anything out there... I was looking at the new Miroslav from IK... but it seems VSL has even more expression and realism.

So... I am looking at VSL instruments' Chamber Strings. (it is actually quite similar in price to the Miroslav IK, although it's not a full symphony). I like the general sounds and closeness of a chamber orchestra... but my question is will I be able to create some bigger violin "sections." For example, I may want some more "whispy" violins in the background.. lets say 14 violins for 1 note, 14 for a second note. Is it possible to "build" such a sound in VI Chamber strings? if so, would it sound okay?

Is there some reverb included with the VI's?

I have a dual 1.8 G5, with 1.25 gigs of ram and a seperate HD for samples and audio.

Thank-you for your assertions and recommendations and advice.. I am very new to the Vienna world.. and may perhaps require some more "talking into" buying it.

Steve
