1.High CPU usage using Spitfire BBCSO/ARO 11/28/2021 6:27:00 AM

Bump; just wondering if anyone has any ideas. As a VEP7 newbie, I'm really eager to get moving. To not be able to use the entirety of BBCSO and ARO simultaneously on a high-end iMac is really disappointment -- I must be missing something...

2.Basic: VEP send all selected instruments to same output? 11/28/2021 6:24:16 AM

Correct, just confirmed this. Once I've switched this off in the prefs, I can now rubber-band group tracks, and ctrl-shift assign all selected tracks to a single output. This does seem like an odd behavior though -- I'd love to see it improved in a future version so the user doesn't have to worry about what the pref is set to.

I still see this but I believe it may be visual only:

1) Rubber-band-select several tracks in the mixer. As they are enclosed in the rectangle, they change color to a lighter color.

2) Click outside in a dead area -- they do not change color.

3) Hit shift-U to unselect -- now they return to their usual color.

Easily repro'able for me: https://youtu.be/IUCAW_0Y-0k

3.Launch server project from Finder? 11/24/2021 6:46:12 PM

I'm on a Mac. I created my first VEP7 template, then saved it as a Server Project on my desktop.

When I start up for the day, I double-click on the Server Project, which launches VEP Server, however, it does not load the Server Project.

Why not?

(Common UX behavior on both Mac and PC is for it to open the document that was double-clicked.)

4.High CPU usage using Spitfire BBCSO/ARO 11/24/2021 6:40:24 PM

New to VEP7, so please be gentle. I have a hunch this might require more extensive troubleshooting, but here's my basic problem.

Setup: high-end iMac i9 with 128GB of RAM. DP11 and Vienna Ensemble Pro Server running on this one computer.

Yesterday I built my first VEP7 template, opening up a new instance for Spitfire's BBCSO Core, and then creating 64 channels (64 instances of Spitfire's monotimbral BBCSO plug-in) so I could have the entirety of BBCSO Core available.

Then I created a second instance for Spitfire's Abbey Road One, which requires 28 channels.

Once I've connected both instances to my host (DP11, where I have two VI tracks, one for BBCSO and one for ARO), VEP shows me extremely high CPU usage: 80-95% in the header of VEP. If I play a single note (on any instrument) it's crackly.

I must be doing something wrong...how do I troubleshoot this and get it working more efficiently?

(This is on a high-end i9 iMac, with 128GB of RAM. Activity Monitor shows VEP is using 17GB of RAM, so plenty of free space. But VEP is using nearly 800% of my CPU on this 8-core machine.)

5.Basic: VEP send all selected instruments to same output? 11/24/2021 6:33:50 PM

Thank you Paul; I appreciate the response.

It still doesn't work. I tried grouping, not grouping, shift-ctrl, shift, ctrl, and every other combination. Still doesn't work. Please see my screen cap video: https://youtu.be/cfeuEsocra4

In my Preferences > Server > Instances, I *do* have "automatically edit selected channels as a group" ENABLED.

Separate question: as per normal UX conventions on both Mac and PC, why can't I click outside the mixer (i.e. in a dead area) in order to unselected the selected channels? This is really counterintuitive.

6.Basic: VEP send all selected instruments to same output? 11/24/2021 2:59:24 AM

I'm new to VEP7 and designing my first template from scratch.

I have dozens of instruments loaded up, and am now looking at them in Mixer view.

I select all instruments, then go to their output selection, then select Out 5/Out 6, and the first channel selected gets sent to 5-6, but the next channel goes to 7-8, the next to 9-10, and so on.

I see the help text at the bottom about using ALT or SHIFT. I've tried both. Some do nothing (i.e. I select the output channel, and nothing changes). Some do ascending assignments.

I just want to send them ALL to the same output, and I've tried EVERY possible combination of modifier keys and it doesn't work.

Please help! This is such a basic function it's frustrating me that it's not easy to figure out.

7.VEP6 and DP 9.5 and High Sierra - what's the word? 8/25/2018 4:33:03 AM

It's been solved for a while now. I think the fix was actually in an OS update from Apple, so make sure you are on the highest of High Sierra versions. Go for it -- it works!

8.Constant DCOM errors 2/9/2018 6:01:52 AM

I just tried that and am still getting the same error.

I made sure to update the eLicenser software (it was not the latest version -- and doesn't offer an auto-update function so I had to manually download), then once I was on the latest, I ran the maintenance.

Still getting the (very frustrating) error. It's always something with this setup...

9.Constant DCOM errors 2/8/2018 1:50:17 AM

Main computer: Mac Pro running El Capitan (10.11.6) and Digital Performer 9.5. Secondary computers: 2 custom PC's running Windows 10.  All 3 computers are running the latest Vienna Ensemble Pro (6.0.1.16778).

I booted up my setup and I'm getting constant DCOM errors. Every time I try and do anything on the Mac, I see the error pop up on both of the secondary computers. Just now, all I did was change the buffer size on the Mac and I got the error again. (Note: the main Mac simply goes to an interminable spinning beach ball. The DCOM error appears on both of the secondary PC's.)

The exact text of the error is: eLicenser Control Error: The Application Vienna Ensemble Pro 6 has caused the following error: DCOM connection to program 'Synsopos.exe' failed. Error: the object invoked has disconnected from its clients."

I have no idea why eLicenser would be having a problem, since both those computers have dongles, have no other problems, and indeed, VEP is working just fine when it's not giving me the error. But I've had the error several times in the past half hour alone.

10.VEP release notes? 1/2/2018 4:06:32 PM

Thanks so much for the reply/update. I had previously looked in that area and didn't see the changelog, but now I looked again and found it. (Sorry, my fault.)

I would reiterate that it would be nice if you let users know directly. A customer e-mail to all registered users, a note on your web site's news page, a Twitter and Facebook mention, etc. would be nice. I see you have an active Facebook profile, but I didn't see a mention of this software update.

I do have my update check enabled, but I don't launch VEP every day (I only use VEP for large-scale orchestral work), and would love to know about updates because they affect my other plans. Sometimes weeks go by without me launching VEP.

Thanks for continuing to work on the DP issue; I'm very excited to get that sorted so I can finally move my entire studio to High Sierra and take advantage of other much-needed features.

11.VEP release notes? 1/2/2018 1:13:45 AM

I just noticed that on December 20 there was an update to Vienna Ensemble Pro (6.0.16751). Where are the release notes so I can see what's changed?

I'm particularly interested in the conflict between Digital Performer and VEP in High Sierra, which was previously mentioned on this forum to be problematic, and I'm wondering if it has been solved yet, so I can finally upgrade.

Second question: I'm slightly frustrated that there is zero announcement or documentation for updates. I didn't get an e-mail informing me of the update, there are no release notes posted anywhere, there is no Twitter or Facebook announcement (that I could see). Does the company make any effort to let users know about updates? If I'm missing obvious places, please let me know. Thank you.

12.VEP6 and DP 9.5 and High Sierra - what's the word? 12/16/2017 2:27:12 AM

Thank you very much for this prompt and specific response -- much appreciated. OK, I will wait on my High Sierra upgrade because my VEP workflow is very important to me.

Here's hoping the fix comes quickly!

13.VEP6 and DP 9.5 and High Sierra - what's the word? 12/15/2017 4:29:53 AM

I've been scouring the VSL web site for an official statement but I don't see any. Is VEP compatible with High Sierra when running inside DP 9.5?

I see scattered forum threads of complaints of it not working, but nothing definitive, and no official statement on the VSL site. I'm anxious for a response because I need to upgrade to High Sierra for other reasons, but am very worried about VEP breaking.

I heard back directly from VSL's tech support that they believe they have fixed this bug in VE Pro 6. So hopefully it's gone. I haven't updated myself yet, but I will soon.

15.Keyboard shortcuts? 10/18/2016 4:08:41 PM

Thanks! No harm at all in pointing to the manual. I had pulled up the manual before but hadn't found it, and a Google search yielded nothing, so chose to post here.

But now the bigger question: you've pointed me to the shortcuts list, but the answer still appears to be "no." :)

It's too late now; I took about an hour yesterday and had to painstakingly reassign every output and every MIDI channel (about 100 of them). Please take it into account as a feature request for the future, though. It would be great if VEP could automate what should be a very simple process of reassigning instances.

16.Keyboard shortcuts? 10/17/2016 11:31:16 PM

Are there any keyboard shortcuts for VEP5?

I'm working on my template and trying to consolidate things and find that:

1) I'd like to assign all projects inside a metaframe to a specific audio output, but I can't find any way to do it other than manually assigning them one at a time. (I have about 100 spread across 2 computers!)

2) Similarly, after combining a dozen projects, each project (instance) is set to MIDI port 1. Is there a way to automatically assign them to sequential ports? So I don't have to manually set 100 MIDI ports?

17.[SOLVED] VEP sometimes hangs on load 9/28/2016 7:10:24 PM

That's very frustrating to know it might be worse in v6. I was already hesitant about upgrading mid-project, and now I'm definitely not going to upgrade until the project is over and I can risk the downtime.

Since this thread received no reply, I've just sent it on to VSL support. Hopefully they will help.

18.[SOLVED] VEP sometimes hangs on load 9/15/2016 5:08:31 PM

Bump. No reply on this? This still happens to me regularly.

I know that, since the writing of this post, VEP6 has been released. I have bought it, but not installed it yet, because I'm in the middle of a major project and don't want to risk it. Was the cause of this ever identified? Might it be fixed in VEP6?

It frustrates me regularly in VEP5.

19.[SOLVED] VEP sometimes hangs on load 8/2/2016 5:12:44 AM

Setup:

Main Mac - running Digital Performer 9.1 and with an orchestral template running 12 instances of the VEP MAS stub plug-in (latest version 5.4 14074)

2 Secondary Windows 10 PC's - running VEP Server 64-bit with lots of instances of Kontakt. I put the VEP metaframe file into the startup items, so that when I turn the Windows PC's on, they automatically launch VEP Server and start loading all their samples. The only plug-in in use within VEP is Kontakt 5 (latest version) and that is running as a 64-bit VST.

The problem:

4 out of 5 times, this all works perfectly.

1 out of 5 times, when I boot up the Windows PC's, VEP Server 64-bit launches, and the main window comes up (the smaller window that normally has the list of all my instances), and I see the overlay with the spinning ball that says "Loading data, please wait..." -- however -- it never loads. None of my instances ever show up, and even if I wait hours (!!) it never budges.

I can always fix it by quitting VEP Server and relaunching it, and it always loads fine on the next launch. Or I can reboot the computer, which will then auto-launch the VEP metaframe and, as stated above, 4/5 of the time it launches fine.

But why does it hang 1 out of 5 times??

How can I troubleshoot this?

20.Sometimes VEP connects, sometimes not 6/15/2016 6:17:44 PM

Originally Posted by: Paul Go to Quoted Post

Really? So every time I'm switching projects on my main computer, but intend to leave all the samples loaded on the slave computers, you want me to go into every single VEP stub plug-in and decouple? That's a lot of manual clicking, only to have to redo it when I re-open!

Regarding the other problem (not automatically connecting) I will see if I can get a reliable repro recipe to demonstrate when they do not auto-connect.

21.Sometimes VEP connects, sometimes not 6/15/2016 6:45:08 AM

Thanks Paul!

I do use static IP addresses. My router assigns by DHCP, so I switched it to DHCP with fixed addresses, so all my computers have internal IP addresses like 192.168.1.5, 192.168.1.6, and so on...

I do use both Preserve and Decouple.

Still, I find they sometimes auto-connect and sometimes don't. I have a suspicion that the order in which they are opened has something to do with it, but not always. Sometimes the slave computers' VEP instances are already open, then on the main machine, I open yesterday's project which connected just fine yesterday, but they don't auto-connect today.

22.Sometimes VEP connects, sometimes not 6/15/2016 12:27:22 AM

I have a main computer (Mac Pro running El Capitan), and two orchestral slaves (one a Mac Pro running El Capitan, the other Windows 10). Everything running the latest versions of everything. The main computer is running DP9 and the VEP MAS stub plug-in. The two slaves are running the 64-bit VEP server.

I find that VEP is erratic about when the MAS stub plug-in connects to its slave instances. Sometimes it connects perfectly, other times it doesn't, so I have to manually connect each instance.

I'm also unclear about what order I should shut down. For example, if I've finished working, and I try and quit VEP on the slave machines, it tells me there are active instances that will be shut down if I quit. If I click yes, it asks me whether I want to save. I'm confused about this, because no changes were made. Am I perhaps accidentally saving things in a disconnected state (which is why they don't auto-connect next time)? However, on next boot, sometimes they do auto-connect, and sometimes they don't.

How can I make auto-connection always work so I can get straight to work every day? What order should I boot things up in, and what order should I shut them down in?

(Side note: I wish I didn't have to think about this at all, and that they just worked in any order. That would make VEP much more friendly!)

23.[SOLVED] VEP5 not showing all MIDI ports 6/14/2016 5:33:25 AM

Solved! Sorry for the confusion.

The answer (for anyone else who finds this thread and wonders the same thing) is that on my MASTER machine, which is running the VEP5 stub plug-in (Vienna Ensemble Pro MAS), I had to go into ITS preferences and also raise the MIDI ports to 48. Once I did that, and after closing and reopening the project, now all 48 are available to me.

24.What's the official answer on VEP5/Kontakt multiprocessing? 6/14/2016 5:18:48 AM

I've been googling but can't find the official recommendation anywhere:

If I'm running VEP5 on a slave PC, and it's loaded with dozens of instances of Kontakt for an orchestral template, what's the recommended setting for the multiprocessing preference in VEP5, and the multiprocessing preference in Kontakt?

(Both allow the selection of single or multi-core, and I'm on an 8-core machine.)

Thanks!

25.[SOLVED] VEP5 not showing all MIDI ports 6/14/2016 5:16:24 AM

Hello,

I'm running the latest VEP5 64-bit server (as of today) on a Windows 10 PC, networked to my main sequencing Mac running DP9 (latest), running the MAS version of the VEP plug-in.

As you'll see in my attached screenshots, I have the VEP preferences on the Windows PC set to 48 MIDI channels per instance, however, only 8 seem to show up.

Can anyone help me figure out where the other 40 are?

Thanks!
