It's been quite awhile since I've been on this forum, and the programs I'm using are definitely older versions of the Vienna Strings Library. I have the Horizon Series Opus 1 and Solo Strings, and here's my setup:

Mac Pro 2x2.8 Ghz Quad-Core Intel Xeon desktop with OS 10.5.8, Logic Pro 8.0.2, EXS Standard Manager Internal Computer Setup (3 hard drives).

Main hard drive: OS, Logic Pro software, 2nd hard drive: All Logic Pro audio files recorded to this drive, 3rd hard drive: Vienna Strings Library samples.

Problem: After upgrading my system from a previous G5 that crashed to my current Mac Pro, and transferring the Vienna Strings files from an external hard drive to a new internal hard drive, the Vienna Strings Library is no longer showing up or loading into the EXS24 Sampler menu in Logic. After some consulting with Andrea Gozzi at Redmatica, I realize I need to re-install the Vienna Strings Library, as the corresponding .exs files, created from the initial installation of VSL and stored in the Logic Sampler Instruments folder, were left behind on my old main drive. I downloaded the newest (15.0.2) free version of Stuffit Expander, but as of yet I have not been able to extract the files from the DVDs.

Not sure how to proceed to get the VSL libraries working with my EXS24 Sampler again. Would very much appreciate help on solving this issue.

Neither the Vienna Strings Library or the Sielaczek Advanced Orchestra are showing up or loading into the EXS24 Sampler menu in Logic. It's not a routing issue, as I've consulted Andrea Gozzi at Redmatica, who told me it is because the Vienna and Siedlaczek files are not .exs files. How do I convert the .wav and .aif files to read as .exs files, or is there another solution?
Things worked fine before with a previous Mac desktop computer, and I had the Vienna Strings and Siedlaczek Orchestra stored on an external hard drive. Then I had to change my setup because that computer failed, and so when I got the new computer I was able to install three internal hard drives, one of which I've dedicated to most of my virtual instruments. I've not been able to get the Vienna Strings or Siedlaczek Orchestra to load into the EXS24 Sampler since then. I can't remember if I copied the files from the old external hard drive to the new internal drive or re-installed them from the DVD's, or if that would even be the cause for things not working with the EXS24 Sampler.
I appreciate any help you can send my way!

Plowman, I'll definitely take that tip on highlighting all audio files at once with "get info"-I still have to do a transfer of all other audio files from my old setup (G3) to my G5. I'll probably be asking a few questions about the most efficient way to do that once I finish this immediate job....

Thanks for the link Aubrey-that's exactly where I was looking last night, but didn't know logic preferences were called info.emagic.logic as opposed to the obvious "logic preferences" as they have been in the past...bug is fixed now.

Hi Plowman-

thanks many times over for the link to sonik matter. I was able to figure out a process that worked for me from different posts on the matter. I copied the audio files on my Audio HD to the desktop of my main Mac HD, highlighted the audio files one at a time, selected "Get Info" from the file menu and changed the permissions from "read only" to "read and write". Then I opened disk utility and ran "repair disk permissions". After that I trashed the original audio files from my Audio HD, and re-copied the "new"audio files on my main Mac HD back to my Audio HD. Then I trashed the audio files on my main Mac HD. Then I opened each song in Logic containing those specific audio files. A new overview was created for each audio files, but this time no error message! Now when I open those Logic songs, everything is as it should be, and I'm not having to sit through the process of it creating a new overview and getting an error message every time I open a song! Still, "open recent" files function within Logic is still not listing anything-any ideas on this?

just a simple question-what do the abbreviations PT HD-3 with 192 i/o stand for-Pro Tools? I'm curious because I will be looking for a system for audio playback and was considering the O1X that Yamaha is coming out with but wondered what the system was that you were talking about. Sorry if stupid question, but I'm a newbie at some of this!

Thanks for the great info-I will be waiting just a bit to make that G5 purchase because my dealer isn't willing to price-protect-so I guess this current project won't get the stellar VSL treatment, but hopefully for the next one I'll be up and running.

The reason I was asking about tempo mapping is that I'm having to reproduce the orchestra from listening to a cd and need to match the sections of music I'm doing exactly with the tempo of the original recording. I've done this before but it's such a long tedious process that I'm always looking for more of an instant solution to save myself a lot of time mapping stuff out. I think I've tried the tap tempo feature before, but it's really difficult trying to follow the ever-changing tempos of music for a theatre production! I'll check those places you mentioned-thanks for the tips.

Thanks for the speedy reply-I have also heard the rumor (from an Apple dealer) who said the same thing-no doubt I'll make sure I'm price-protected so I can buy that extra RAM once prices go down on the 2Ghz DP G5. I'm curious as to how you would suggest storing audio-I'll have a 160 GB drive on the G5, and also a 120 GB external drive, on which I have the Opus 1 and Solo Strings loaded.
Also one more question-I was told by a friend that MOTU's Digital Performer has a feature where you can take an imported audio file and get DP to create a tempo map of the audio file from beginning to end. I haven't been able to figure out how to do that in Logic successfully-(I'm assuming you're a Logic user since you were checking out the EXS section on the forum).
Thanks for the advice on RAM and virtual memory-it will be a big help when I get the G5!

I will be purchasing a 2Ghz Dual G5 in the next few days. I run Logic Platinum 6.3.1 with the EXS 24 sampler.I know there are some issues between Vienna Symphonic Library, the EXS24 Sampler, and OS 10.3.on the G5, concerning the disk streaming operations. As I'm in a time crunch to get a project done, what do I need to do to avoid/resolve those issues when using the G5, or has that problem been resolved since the NAMM show? If not, I would really appreciate tips in getting things going quickly and smoothly-I already have both Opus 1 and Solo Strings loaded on an external 120GB 7200rpm 8MB cache drive. Thanks!

I uninstalled Stuffit Deluxe 8.0 and reinstalled it. Still had the same problem with it quitting during expanding large .exe file, although it seemed to get a little farther than usual-is it possibly a memory problem? I don't know how to increase memory to an application in OS X-Any thoughts?

I copied the 00 strings ensemble.exe from the EXS "instruments" folder on the DVD to my desktop. Then I copied the 00 strings_ensemble.exe from the EXS "samples" folder on the DVD to my desktop. Using Stuffit Expander 8.0, I expanded the 00 strings ensemble.exe from the EXS "instruments" folder into the sample instruments folder within the Logic 6 folder on my laptop. After that I expanded the 00 strings_ensemble.exe from the EXS "samples" folder into the sample instruments folder within the Logic 6 folder on my laptop. Same problem-stuffit will expand the small .exe file but quits when trying to expand the large .exe file. I also tried expanding the large .exe into its own folder called VSL Samples within Logic 6-same old problem. Is there something I'm not doing correctly in the process? I've tried just about everything at this point, and am wondering if I'm missing something or if there's a software problem. Thanks for any help!

Thank you very much for the post. Unfortunately I had the same results with Stuffit 6.0 quitting while expanding the .exe files from the "samples" folder. Perhaps it is an extensions conflict between Stuffit and OS 10.2.8 and the files on the DVD, but I wouldn't know where to begin with that. I'm going to call Logic's tech support tomorrow and see if I can find any more info on the installation process. I'm hoping there's someone with a setup like mine out there!

Hi-am new user-just purchased Opus 1 and Solo Strings from Horizon series. Have a powerbook G4 500 mhz with 1 GB RAM, OS 10.2.8. Also just purchased a 120 GB external firewire drive, 7200 rpm 8 MB cache. I am using Logic Platinum 6.3.1 with the EXS24 mkII sampler. I have been trying to install Disc 1 of Opus 1 using Stuffit Expander 8.0.1. Have been able to install the .exe files from the "instruments" folder on disc 1, but no success with the .exe files from the "samples" folder on disc 1. Every time I try to expand an .exe file from the "samples" folder, about halfway through the process, Stuffit expander "unexpectedly" quits. Not sure what the problem is, but I could definitely use some help-have been trying for awhile with no success and need to get it up and running for a large project due soon! Thanks for any help you or anyone else can send my way.
