1.How to use Buses and create sends in MIR Pro & VE Ensemble Pro 11/3/2016 7:54:40 PM

It may be shocking but, in fact I do not know, how to use Bus channels and create sends in Instrument channels in MIR PRO/VE PRO mixers. This is because, for years, I've composed using Finale as the input source addressing  standalone configurations of VE Pro/Mir Pro configurations. through the IAC ports. Then when I was done I transferred the MIDI file to Logic, where I could easily create sends, load effects in bus or aux channels etc.  Right now it would most useful if I could introduce the effects I need wdirectly in a Ve Pro/Mir Pro configuration. Forgive my lack of knowledge. I need step by step instructions on how to do this. I may be nistaken but the manual does not seem to have a simple set of directions for achieving this. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

Where can I find and download MIR Pro Venue Presets? Thnaks.

3.Probems moving 32 chanel template to Logic 7/27/2015 6:33:14 PM

Hi there,

My usual way of working is to write music in Finale and use a standalone configuration of VE PRO/MIR as a playback object addressed through the IAC busses created in Apple's Audio MIDI setup. (Using VSL plugins within Finale would be problematic since Finale is still a 32 bit program and is not multi-processor aware.) Then, I make a MIDI file which I open with Logic and use Logic to create a virtual performance.

Recently I created 32 Channel Template in VE PRO5/MIR. I now want to transfer this template so that it can function as a plugin within Logic. I opened the template in VE PRO Server and saved it as a Metaframe. I opened Logic and instantiated two instances of VE PRO in Logic. One is instantiated as 16 instances of Instrument 1, the other is instantiated as 16 instances of Instrument 2. I connected both of these instances to the template. In the original template Finale's channel 17, became Bus 2, Channel i. In the template opened as a Metaframe within VE Pro Server what was Bus 2, Channel 1 is identified as "2VE PRO plugin Midi in 2 Channel 1" However, when I attempt to play the instrument that is supposed to be on that channel, I get rthe same instrument that is on 1VE PRO plugin Midi in 1, Channel 1. What am I doing wrong? How can I fix this? I'd be most appreciative of any help or insight. Thanks in advance.

I reallydon't know but there is something important you should know that I discussed in another posting:

"Begining  with Yosemite, Apple has excluded all third party TRIM enablers. Angelbird, an Austrian company, claims that its wrk drives for the Mac enable TRIM using the TRIM enabler that is native to OS 10.10.  Other World Computing states that their drives don't need TRIM. Samsung drives and all other third party drives are thereby excluded from full functionality by Yosemite. Please check out the following links:

These will tell you what TRIM is and why this is an important issue.

By refusing to approve third party TRIM enablers and by making its own TRIM enabler work only with  Apple's own drives, Apple appears to be engaged in a classic and illegal restraint of trade action. You should complain to Apple and notify the anti-trust division of the US DOJ.

 Good luck."

8.Solid State drive for samples best block size, best preload size? 10/27/2014 9:14:26 PM

I'm considering the purchase of a Firmtek Seritek/6G2 PCIe SATA adapter on which would be mounted two Samsung 1TB 850 Pro Series drives. I would partition the drives so that 1.4TB was devoted to samples and 500GB to software and files. I would most appreciate anyone's assessment of this scheme and insight into what the best block size and preload size would be for this setup.

Thanks,

Stephen

9.Logic 9.1.8 won't validate Vienna Ensemble Pro under OS 10.9.3 6/20/2014 8:33:11 PM

I was assured by Apple that Logic 9.1.8 would work under OS 10.9.3, however when I opened Logic it refused to validate several components of Vienna Ensemble Pro. The error message was as follows:

10.Solid state Drive Question 2/16/2014 9:59:37 PM

I'm considering the purchase of an Other World Computing Mercury Accelsior PCIe drive for my sample libraries. It is advertised as having a potential top speed of 820MB/s. Does anyone have experience with this drive? What would be a recommended preload size? Thanks in advance.

11.[SOLVED] Invisible Controller 7 data - how did it get there, why does it persist? 1/18/2014 9:10:13 PM

Problem was that, for reasons best known by the computer elves, automation was turned on in this one track and set to a slightly lower level than 0 db. I turned it off and problems ceased.

12.[SOLVED] Invisible Controller 7 data - how did it get there, why does it persist? 1/18/2014 6:32:07 PM

I recently completed a piece for 8 instruments in Finale 2010.  I then made a MIDI file (after having turned off Finale's Human Playback) and opened it in Logic 9.  In playing back the score from Finale, I had employed a standalone configuration of Vienna Ensemble Pro5/MIR accessed through the IAC ports.

As we all know one of the nice features of the Vienna Instruments Pro sample player is that it allows the user to assign any controller to any parameter. Since I wanted to use Finale's MIDI Tool for volume and expression effects rather than relying on Finale HP's interpretation of what I wrote, I assigned Volume to Controller 35 and Expression to Controller 19. I set MIDI Volume within Finale (in the instruments list window) to 90 which corresponds to a 0 db setting in Logic. When I opened he MIDI file in Logic I found that, despite the fact that I had turned off Human Playpack,  the MIDI file contained a great deal of Controller 7 (volume) data that reflected the cresc. and dim. hairpins in the score. I erased all this data from every track and set Controller 7 t0 90. This is important because I opted to instantiate the instruments as VI Pro instances within Logic and used the MIR plugin instead of instantiating Vienna Ensemble Pro 5/MIR as a 16 channel configuration assigned, in Logic, to Instrument One. This means that although I could avoid Controller 7 data from affecting the instruments themselves, any CC 7 data in Logic's Software Instrument tracks would affect Logic's mixer controls. Unfortunately I have encountered an anomaly. In the piano track there appears to be invisible CC 7 (volume) data: no matter how many times I insert a CC 7 = 90 command, an instant later I can observe the mixer jumping down to -2.2db. This is particularly iroinc in that the piano track would never normally have CC 7 data except at the beginning. Mysteriously, if one looks at Logic's event lists or observes Controller 7 data in the Hyperdraw window there is no indication of any command other that CC 7 = 90. Nonetheless, one has to assume that the MIDI file created by Finale has some invisible Controller 7 data in it. How could this happen? How could it be avoided? I'd appreciate anyone's insight regarding this. Thanks in advance.

13.Inaudible instrument becomes audible 1/9/2014 7:14:03 PM

I solved the problem in the following manner. First I opened an earlier version of the file with the same VI Pro presets for each instrument. The track that had been inaudible, the clarinet track, was audible. Cleary the VI Pro Preset was not to blame since it worked in one Logic 9 file but not in another. I returned to the problematic file. I created a new software instrument track and instantiated the same Clarinet preset as the one deployed in the inaudible track. I then moved the MIDI data to this track and copied the MIR settings from the original track. The track played back without incident. I then deleted the inaudible track. It appears that the problem was within Logic or with some interaction between VI Pro and Logic 9.

14.Inaudible instrument becomes audible 1/7/2014 11:52:39 PM

This regards a Logic 9 file in which VI Pro is instantiated in 9 Logic Tracks and each track has the MIR plugin inserted into it. I have been working on this file for a few weeks without incident. But then, twice during the past few days an instrument stopped making any sound after I'd been editing its track for a while. In the first case, I quit Logic and restarted the computer and the instrument resumed playing normally. In the second case, quitting Logic and restarting did not make the instrument audible again - - although VI Pro's meters showed its signal. All the other tracks play normally. Does anyone have any ideas regarding what might be causing this? I'd be most appreciative of any help.

Thanks,

Stephen

15.How does one instantiate Room Tone in a Logic file using the MIR plugin? 12/22/2013 11:52:43 PM

We seem to be talking at cross purposes. There is, of course, an on/off switch directly to the left of the RoomTone's volume fader in MIR Pro's Main window, if one is running MIR Pro as a standalone or as a plugin in combination with VE Pro 5. Howeverin MIR Pro's main window when no such button appearsone is using the MIR Pro plugin inserted into the individual software instrument tracks of Logic 9's mixer and one dedicates an AUX channel strip to another insstantiation of the MIR Pro plugin which is then set to Room Tone. Oddly enough, RoomTone does not actually have a sonic effect, nor do its meters show any sign of life if one merely plays an instrument using a MIDI keybopard (or presumably other MIDI input device) It does, however, come on automatically when one pushes play in Logic and remains on thereafter until one quits Logic.Well that's wha I thought but, once again, Room Tone has become inaudible - - even under the circumstances described above where it was formerly audible.

All the best,

Stephen

16.How does one instantiate Room Tone in a Logic file using the MIR plugin? 12/19/2013 8:36:35 PM

Thanks Dietz.

Problem continued, however. I had room tone working when I instantiatedMIR PRO plugin as an insert in AUX channel strip. By changing the volume setting on the plugin's volume control, I could hear the ambient noise or room tone increase or decrease. When I soloed an instrument it would dissappear. All this seemd to indicate that it was working. However, when I removed from the AUX channel strip and put it - - as an insert - - in a software instrument channel strip, it ceased to function - - no audible output, meter showed no output, moving the volume slider changed nothing. . Removing it from the software instrment channel strip and putting it back in the AUX channel strip did not fix the situation: again no audible difference whether it is on or bypassed. Where can one turn on Room Tone in MIR's main window?  I see a slider to set Room Tone volume in the main window that moves in tandem with the slider on the plugin, but not a switch to turn it on or off.  .No doubt there's something obvious I'm not understanding or seeing.

But wait, now the instantiation in an AUX channel strip is working!!! .

In any case thanks for your help.

Stephen

17.How does one instantiate Room Tone in a Logic file using the MIR plugin? 12/19/2013 3:53:59 PM

Exactly how does one instantiate Room Tone in a Logic 9.1.8 file using the MIR plugin?

Thanks in advance,

Stephen

18.Repeated Logic Crashes with VI Pro 12/19/2013 3:51:32 PM

Hi Paul,

Thanks for responding. Fixed up my profile :-) Aside from that, for reasons best known to the computer elves, the Logic file in question simply stopped crashing the next day. But then another issue devekoped - -VI Pro was suddenly no longer able to access the more recent preset files in the custom data folder. In each instantiation only one empty matrix appeared. Luckily I had a backup made the previous day. When I opened the backup file, VI Pro immediately saw and loaded the correct presets, everything worked normally and no crashes occurred. One last question which I will post here and also, more appropriately, in the MIR discussion section. Exactly how does one instantiate Room Tone in a Logic 9 file using the MIR plugin?

Thanks again,

Stephen

19.Repeated Logic Crashes with VI Pro 12/18/2013 4:54:33 PM

Hi,

I'm wondering if someone might understand why a file originating as a MIDI file created in Finale 2010 and then opened in Logic 9.1.8 (set in 64 bit mode) with ten instantiations of VI Pro (2.4.12844)( 6.6 GB of samples loaded) would consistently crash, while the same file employing the same configuration of samples instantiated in VE Pro 5/MIR functioning as plugin within Logic (i.e. not as a standalone) has not displayed any anomalies and has not yet crashed.

Please note that my system is slightly different than described in my signature. (I can't seem to find a way to change my signature itself as the means for doing so do not appear in any obvious place under the profile tab - - or I'm just blind. (I would very much appreciate help with this as well.) The OS for both computers is now OS 10.7.4; Logic is now version 9.1.8 and the samples are stored on a 3 TB Raid 0 array made up of 3 1TB WD 7200 RPM drives.

Thanks in advance for any help or insight.

20.inability to sustain some notes when Finale 2010 is playback source 9/27/2012 7:25:41 PM

As strange as what I first described is that when I changed the patch to the sustained legato, it plays correctly. As I think I originally noted, the original problem occurred whether Human Playback was turned on or turned off.

21.inability to sustain some notes when Finale 2010 is playback source 9/27/2012 2:37:34 PM

Hi Andi,

Thanks for your response. I've checked - - as you suggested - - and the correct patch is being played. Oddly enough, when I copy the passage to a new file it plays correctly. When I copy it back to the original file the same problem occurs. There are no slurs in this passage. It is not a particularly dense passage. Activity monitor states that the User is consuming about 8.5% of available CPU. I will try copying the passage to some newly added measures in the original flle in case there is something wrong in this particular part of the file.

22.inability to sustain some notes when Finale 2010 is playback source 9/26/2012 10:02:23 PM

In a passage I'm writing there are spme fairly long notes for Eb clarinet. I decided to use the "long notes single layer" (mp) samples. When I play the passage using my keyboard the notes which seem to be very skillfully looped last as long as I would like. When I play the same passage in Finale 2010 some of the notes are sustained for their full notated length but some, towards the end of the passage drop out. This is true whether or not "Human Playback" is activated. It happens when the line is soloed or played as part of the ensemble. In the same passage I employ the flute version of the "long notes single layer" samples and there is no similar problem. Anyone have an idea about what is happening? Thanks.

23.Problems with Finale, VE Pro and VI Pro 3/20/2012 2:11:36 PM

Hi Winknotes,

Thanks for your help. The problem turned out to be a failing drive as described in my reply to Andi. As to your suggestion, I would have no idea how to set "processor affinity" on a Mac. Perhaps you know how. I'd be most appreciatve.

Thanks,

Stephen

24.Problems with Finale, VE Pro and VI Pro 3/20/2012 2:09:08 PM

Hi Andi,

Thanks for your advice. The probelm seems a failing drive in the RAID 0 array which holds the samples. As I mentioned the indicator lights were not blinking equally, but both Drive Utility and DiskWarrior pronounced the array ok and Disk Utility verified the S.M.A.R.T. status of both drives. However, I downloaded the demo version of Smart Utility and it immediately identified one of the drives as "failing." Unfortunately I didn't have an extra drive last night to back up the RAID and - - rather uncleverly - - I turned off the drive.array. I acquired a drive this morning but as you might expect it is not copying the array contents very well.. So I have the delightful prospect of reinstalling all the samples on a new drive. One question, since I acquired the Symphonic Cube there have been periodic updates of the sample libraries - - are these included in the latest updates? Thanks.

Stephen

25.Problems with Finale, VE Pro and VI Pro 3/19/2012 10:25:35 PM

I'm beginning to wonder if one of the two drives in my RAID 0 is not working properly as this problem now occurs just when I attempt to play a single line. The lights indicating drive activity in the Firmtek enclosure do not flicker equally: one of these lights flickers only intermittently while the other is much more continuously flickering during playback. I've tested the drives with Drive Utility and Disk Warrior and they check out ok, Are the symptoms I've described consistenet with the beginning of a drive failure?  Any thoughts? Thanks again.
