1.Sample error in FL1_run_chrom_200+0run 11/16/2006 4:13:07 AM
I need a chromatic flute run and bumped into a problem.

There is a mess at the top of the run ascending from B5 to B6 and C5 to C6 when performed piano (volume velocity). They are probably using the same sample. Around B6 or is it A#6? a note is repeated. I can't quite figure it out. The forte velocity sample works fine on the same run.

The sample FL10runchrom16-160_p_up_C#6.wav seems to have a glitch in the run at the top.

Is there a fix? I tried searching the forum and there seems to be no fix in the user area.

I would like this run for my piece (without the goof).
2.The VSL Podcast - Show 025 11/7/2006 10:01:07 PM
Hi Hetoreyn,

Just sitting here listening to a few old issues of your podcasts and am VERY thankful for the effort you are putting in to the programs you create. Very useful for me and not just useful, they are inspiring! I am working toward having something for you to podcast but it will take quite a while. Your activity in the educational/inspirational aspect of using the VSL sample library is laudatory, praiseworthy and certainly of service. Thanx!

3.Sustenuto Blends samples - where? 10/21/2006 2:17:28 AM
Yup. I figured it out myself.
4.Sustenuto Blends samples - where? 10/17/2006 12:06:45 PM
Ok. Suddenly my search of the forum has resulted in many hits regarding Sustenuto Blends but I can not really ascertain if these instruments are meant for the Pro Edition. Are they only for the Opus 1 collection? I cannot read on the update page that these "updates" of EXS instruments are designed for a certain collection. So, I downloaded them, dutifully installed them - fortunately - in separate folders and as I just posted could not link the samples to the instruments.

If these EXS updates are not for the Pro Edition, then why do they appear as available for "my registered products"?

Best regards,
taatsiaq
5.Sustenuto Blends samples - where? 10/16/2006 12:19:25 AM
I am at a loss. I downloaded the available updates from the user area according to the programs I have purchased - complete Pro Edition - and along with the downloaded updates files were Exs instruments titled Sustenuto Blends which I dutifully placed in the appropriate Exs instruments folders. The title of the update is: Sustenuto Blends+ updates for Harp, Viola, Oboe, Trumpet-Ensemble, Horn-Ensemble, Trombone-Ensemble for Performance Set (Pro Edition) (EXS)

However, ExsManager can not find any of the samples that go with these instruments. What gives?

I have searched the forum and found only three (non helpful) references. Can you help me to understand my next move?

Thanks in advance.

6.Kai's Tool and Mobius's Chart 10/5/2006 4:22:20 PM
cm. Thanks for the E-mail address. I'm trying it now.

Hetoreyn. As soon as I get some sign from Kai, I'll send you a copy of the tool for you to post. The major difference with Kai's Articulation Tool is that you do not get a useless score because of all of the switch key notes showing up. Each note is given a channel number and is routed to the 16 instances of EXS on one channel splitter thus showing up on one track. Even the switch keys controling the VSL Performance Tool are routed by the attached environment Performance Keys Tool. You still need key switches but you can freely program them (map them) to a second keyboard in any arrangement you wish. I am using the tool and am pleased with what it does for me.

Best regards
7.kai's articulation tool question/problem 10/5/2006 3:31:48 AM
Hej JT3_Jon.

I can understand that you are having trouble with the manual. I have just completed a new version and will try to post it in the next few days or so. If you send me your E-mail I can send you a copy. The tool is made for Logic. I'm amazed you got it to work for K2.

I'm a rank beginner and worked on the manual because I wanted to figure it out. I've moved a little forward and some back but I do have the tool working and I am using it. Perhaps we can assist one another.
8.Kai's Tool and Mobius's Chart 10/5/2006 3:25:20 AM
Kai of Kai's Articulation Tool.

If you are out there, contact me. I can't seem to find your E-mail address and would like you to see the revised manual before I do anything I am not supposed to do! hehe

9.Kai's Tool and Mobius's Chart 10/5/2006 3:22:38 AM
First of all, Hetoreyn, I'm enjoying your podcasts. Keep them coming.

Second. I have been working on Kai's user manual (again) and have another update which I hope you will post as you did before. I was reading it over a few days ago and found that a newbie would experience a good deal of confusion over some lacking information, some pretty strange wording and the spelling errors. Originally I set out just to correct Kai's original manual and didn't know how far to go with me "proof reading". Didn't go far enough. Anyway, the new manual update can perhaps be located as another version alongside the v.2 so folk can pick and choose. If anyone has suggestions to the v.3 I send you, I would be quite happy to receive them to include in a v.3.1 edition.

I think I now understand his Articulation Tool and my understanding has helped rework the manual. As soon as I can check it one last time and create a .pdf from the Word doc then I'll E-mail it to you if you will allow it.

Best regards and again, hats off to the podcast work you are doing.
10.Kai's articulation tool/macro 3/1/2006 4:04:16 PM
Is anyone using Kai's articulation tool/macro in Logic?
I have not heard any "chatter" on this forum regarding this alternative way of controlling VSL after having rewritten the manual and may have missed a thread. His articulation tool seems to be a no-brainer winner in terms of easing the use of VSL, but I am not a heavy hitter user. I have resigned myself to creating very simple pieces because of the daunting task of making it all work at a larger scale.
I would be very interested to know if anyone else has been using Kai's macro and if Kai doesn't mind, I would like to make availabe the rewritten manual. However, I do not have the computer skills to make it available from here so others could download it so I would need help to make it available. I do not have a website. It would be a shame for this tool to go unnoticed if, in fact, it does make work easier. I think, perhaps, that Kai is a little too shy about promoting his good work.

Best regards,

taatsiaq

12.Perf Tool Version? 2/19/2006 12:32:00 AM
JWL,
If you are working in Logic, Kai's Articulation Tool is well worth looking at and can be downloaded free. He is working on a revised manual and may post it if encouraged to do so. I can't remember the link for the download but you can search for it on this forum.

13.OT: Thanks to VSL (helped me win the 'Best Score') 12/26/2005 8:01:34 PM

I am not familiar with "Kai's tool" - maybe I should know more about it

Rob,

You can get a free copy at http://www.qualitystudio.net/fileman

It is a very useful tool for handling articulation changes by changing midi channels before signal is sent to a channel splitter in the enviornment in Logic. Places up to 16 articulations on one track with no keyswitch notes in your score. If you are using Logic then it is very handy. I didn't notice which platform you are running.

Rob, your work is wonderfully done. You deserve the recognition. Kudos. I am inspired to try a little harder, dig a little deeper. Thank you for sharing your music, your work methods and your sucesses with us on the forum.

Just one question. Did you utilize Kai's articulation tool? How did you manage all the articulation changes? (Ok, that's two questions, but same topic.)

16.some betatester VI solovioin demos 12/19/2005 4:51:03 PM
I, too, would be interested in a review by someone new to the product which represents my situation. This would perhaps have a number of positive results:
1. a written user manual with tutorials repleat with midi files, enviornment setups, practical examples. And additional video tutorials. FinalCutPro's offering comes to mind.
2. a product that perhaps would have various access, use levels, ie. VSL for beginners, intermediate and advanced users.
3. a product that has broader appeal for a variety of users: those who write from score, keyboard players, programmers, experimenters.
4. a more open source approach. No one instance (even VSL) can do everything and the assistance of the users out there have made my ProEdition available in a real way to me through the articulation tool created by Kai and the Forum discussions.

We are all blind to our own errors and shortcomings or simply to unrevealed potential. The many eyes and ears and talents of the independent (relatively new) user might go a good way to assist in this worthy project.

17.NEW unOfficial EXS24mkII VSL User File Exchange 12/11/2005 4:05:07 AM
Hello Kai,
I'm back from vacation and now have v.2. MUCH improved over v.1. You've created a tool which has given me access to the library that I didn't have before. Thank you. Very much.
I'm a little frustrated by having just purchased the ProEd and now being faced with the VI set. I can't keep up. My remote location doesn't allow me to earn enough to upgrade to VI nor pay for the ProEd. I therefore am especially thankful for your efforts and your open attitude towards helping us who are out in the "boonies" and new at the game.

Keep up the good work and enjoy knowing you have been of considerable service to many.

Kai, you've done me a great favor. Your Articulation tool has opened up the Orch. Cube and Perfmance Set Pro Editions I have owned now for a while but have not really been able to use. I thank you very much.

I do have a question or two. Do I now have to create new exs instruments for the library I have?

Does your Articulation Tool replace me having to create channel splitters for each track?

How do I create new articulation settings? You list seven with titles and from 8 to 16 there are numbers. I can't figure out how to load more instruments from which to choose alternative articulations.

I totally understand if you have no time to answer these questions. I am most grateful for the amazing work you already have done. Again, cudos.
19.xsKey replacement has no VSL authorisation on it 6/14/2005 12:06:46 AM
thanx cm. I am now running on 128 days of demo authorization using the old authorization number.
20.xsKey replacement has no VSL authorisation on it 6/13/2005 4:23:36 AM
One further comment re XSkey. The Apple guy wrote to me regarding the replacement XSkeys and I quote:
"The XSkey manager software does not utilize the latest firmware versions of the XSKey. The XSkey manager has been obsolete since we realed Logic Pro 6.4.0. Any version from 6.4.0 on up till know will not accurately interpret the status of the XSKey. we recommend actually removing it, there have been times when running it on a new firmware version of the XSKey can scramble the XSkey." I read that one should check to see if the authorization is on the key.

What am I to believe? I don't know if I should even check to see which authorizations are on my key for fear of potential "scramble".
21.xsKey replacement has no VSL authorisation on it 6/13/2005 3:47:40 AM
I have the same problem as Fich. I lost my key and apple kindly and promptly sent me two replacement keys. Now I have no VSL authorization on the two new keys. Help me on this one. I just received the Orch Cube (and the two keys) and need to get going. Where do I send my key numbers and to whom in order to get these keys authorized for both ProEd and OrchCube? One key is for my G5 and one (perhaps) for my PowerBook although this one might just live in my bank box from now on! Warning, don't misplace your key. My studio went almost totally down and I had to go back to my Apple 9500 and ProTools 4. Really s l o w.
22.Workshops 5/14/2005 2:07:46 PM
I, too, would be interested in a little trip to Germany for a study course in using VSL, but in English. We really need a world language in addition to our mother tongue so we could all communicate yet keep our separate cultural heritages alive and growing.
23.Alternation Mode with Performance Set 3/24/2005 2:01:14 PM
Your reply much appreciated. I think that VSL could make this clear on the web site. I asked specifically before purchasing as to the difference between the Performance Set and the Orch. Cube and was assured that if just the Performance was purchased it would be enough to do an orchestral work. It would have been nice to have read that the only orchestral pieces one can do are legato pieces with repetition. Knowing this would have saved me 100s of dollars because I did get a nice offer of reduced price if I bought the entire library, which I would have done. Now I have to go out and pay (probably) full price for the Orch. Cube. You really should explain clearly the difference on you web site which I used: www.ilio.com/vienna/index.html and then click, click, click on Complete Orch. Package, Orchestral Cube, Performance Set to compare. It would be great if there was a compare page with the advantages of each set on one page so the buyer could make a more informed decision. You already speak the language of VSL know what each bundle can and can't do and the first time buyer does not. It should be obvious to state that the Performance Tool associated on the web site with the Performance Set which includes all three modes, only two of which can be used, should state that in order to use the alternation mode one must have the Orchestral Cube. I assumed from the demo videos on your site that i could achieve the diverse articulations with the Performance Set.

This is not complaining but a suggestion as to how you could be of even better service than you are to the customers who have not yet purchased - that is all of us at some point - in making an informed decision.

Now I am sitting with a half hour video that I have committed to using VSL (for the first time) and am forced to write legato and repetition passages and will have to wait to get more samples from my dealer in the States.
Sorry about the long reply. I do want you to know that I think your service after purchasing is top notch. I have not experienced better, period.

Again thanks for your help.

25.Alternation Mode with Performance Set 3/24/2005 1:43:54 AM
Hi Paul,

Thanks for the answer. Helpful. I have a little more that I would like to know. Are there any Basic_ all or Basic_all+ts instruments/sample sets in the Performance Set Pro Ed.? The dealer from whom I purchased installed the data on the DVDs on the G5 I purchased and I am wondering if something was not installed.

I would very much like to be able to change articulations from note to note and it seems like th Alternation Mode Tool is the ticket. I have been through all the folders in my VSL folder and only see legato and repetition instruments.

Do I need to buy other samples to get staccato, tenuto, legato, staccato on four successive tones? Legato and repetition are great but far from enough for the scores I'm trying to bring to life.

Best regards, taatsiaq
