  • Vienna Key FAQ - again

I've just studied the Vienna Key FAQ and I can't quite believe what I've read.

My key is out of the 2-year warranty and I do not have a Vienna Protection plan.  I understand that should the key go bad, each replacement licence will cost 20 euro.  I have 37 licences on my key so I would have to pay 740 euro to have them replaced!  This seems a little unfair as the licences are already paid for.  Surely, if a key goes bad, all we need is a new physical key onto which we can download our licences.  Paying for a new physical replacement key is fair, but to pay again for software licences seems like sharp practice.

    Perhaps my understanding is incorrect?

    HI Richard,

Your understanding is correct, and there are 2 ways to prevent you from such a situation:

    1) Get a new ViennaKey every 2 years (hardware warranty)

    2) Get a Vienna Protection Plan (which works for older keys as well and also covers theft/loss).

Here is an overview of the possible scenarios for broken/stolen/lost keys.

    Best,
    Paul

  • Thanks Paul for bearing with me - I'm trying to get it clear in my mind what I need to do safeguard my purchases because until now I hadn't realised that I needed to.

My USB key was purchased 8 years ago (and still going strong) from Steinberg for a Cubase licence, to which I later added my Vienna licences.  According to the Steinberg website, if a key goes bad, and so long as it was originally registered with them, then on purchase of a new key, they will update the existing Steinberg licences to the new key - with no fee to pay.  That's how I understand it.

But, if I want to protect my Vienna licences, I have to buy a new key every two years - because then I'll have a key always under warranty and Vienna won't charge extra to transfer existing licences to a key under warranty.

Does a key have to be bought from Vienna rather than from Steinberg to qualify for the Vienna two year warranty?

    Regards, Richard.

  • Hello Richard,

You are correct, Steinberg usually replaces licenses on the FIRST broken key, with their programs that are usually updated once a year (Cubase, Nuendo...).

The 2-year warranty works for every key, be it a Steinberg or a ViennaKey. The date of purchase is the important part here.

    Best,
    Paul
